Here are the few simple questions to ask a spiral bevel gear supplier:
1. Request 3-dimensional CAD model of spiral bevel tooth surfaces for examination by an expert. Many errors can be found on the initial stage of the gear design. The vendor could provide a 3-d CAD IGES, STEP or other file of the tooth surfaces for gear and for the pinion.
2. Request simulation of the tooth contact before manufacturing of gears. The tooth contact should be checked on special Tooth Contact Simulation software before manufacturing. If the tooth contact is not checked, you will end up with cutting a few more gears in order to achieve the required tooth contact. Simulation of the tooth contact on the computer model requires a special software. If your vendor has such of tooth contact simulation software it assures the high quality of spiral bevel gears.
3. Ask if the tooth contact has been checked on the computer model when the gear shaft or the pinion shaft is misaligned or in run out. The tooth contact should stay within the working area of the tooth for all the operational misalignment. TCA software will do the test.
4. Ask how is the tooth surface was modified in order to account for deflections during the heat treatment. The correctly designed tooth surface should be modified in order to account for the repeatable deflections during induction or case hardening.
5. Request FEA of the root stress.
Very often, companies advertise that they make the best spiral bevel gears based on the facts that they own the largest quantity of gear production machines. It is true that the cost of these machines will translate into the cost of the product. In our opinion, the number or the size of the production machines does not always result in achieving the highest quality of the gears at lowest cost. We believe that the intellectual property can be more effective for improving the quality and for increasing the torque capacity of bevel gears.
Besides making spiral bevel gears we are offering services of detail examination of the existing gears and then we correct the design, tooth geometry and tooth contact, and we produce replacement gears. We demonstrate our advantage by practical examination of the existing gears and manufacturing of replacement gears. Thanks to our unique experience in mathematical simulations and modeling we often find numerous hidden irregularities in current spiral bevel gears. Detection of such of hidden defects would be impossible by the commonly practicing inspection methods such as contact pattern inspection on the rolling tester. Ironically, we have been often criticized for our practices of examination of the existing gears and making recommendations for corrective actions. In practice, we can examine any spiral bevel gear by taking a few points on CMM and then we reverse engineer the original Gleason or Klingelnberg machine summary in order to discover that, often, the original summary does not produce a correct gear. With out tooth contact simulation software we calculate the tooth contact in very high resolution and determine what corrections are required. In result, we reproduce exactly identical gear or a corrected gear that would mesh with the original gear or with a new gear.
